Natural Talent

I'm a huge music fan but I haven't been impressed with what I hear on the radio lately, so I was surprised when I found this song on Youtube. The song is called 'Seven' by Alicia James, you can visit her channel by clicking on the video above. The song immediately caught my attention because of the spiritual and positive message it conveys. According to Alicia 'Seven' is a number used in the Bible to represent completion. I don't think that she's signed to a major label which makes it all the more wonderful, because we get to see someone who is truly talented write, perform, and produce their own music and it sounds better than most of the songs that are on the radio nowadays. I hope you guys like her song as much as I do and give you're love and support to a fellow natural.

Six Easy Steps To going Natural

Nowadays, many women have made the decision to give up the lyes and embrace the hair that they were born with. I think more and more women are starting to realize that we've been fed lies all our lives. That straight hair is not the only beauty there is and black women can grow long hair. I've put together a few pointers based on my own experience and the experience of others.

STEP 1: Realize that commercial cosmetic companies do not care about the effects that their products have on our hair. Their main goal is to sell us their products and make us keep buying them. Seek out products with more natural ingredients. For example; sulfate free shampoos, products that are paraben free, and silicone free. Find a moisturizer and conditioners that contain butters, and essential oils. A good leave in conditioner should be ph balanced to smooth the cuticles. Look for ingredients like aloe vera.
STEP 2: Relaxers contain harmful chemicals such as sodium hydroxide which is found in drain cleaner. Yes, relaxers do straighten your hair but it also strips it of the natural oils. If you do decide to chemically straighten your hair make sure to do regular conditioner treatments. If you decide to do the big chop do weekly conditioning treatments with the natural products that you've just purchased. As well as protein treatments every once in  while. How often you decide to do a protein treatment depends on you. You can tell when your hair needs protein when it is overloaded with moisture. Also scalp health is also important, massage your scalp three to four days a week with a blend of essential oils like castor oil, jojoba oil. etc. If you chose to transition; don't forget that your hair now has two textures, moisturize your natural roots on a regular basis with water and sealants like butters. You can apply a moisturizer to your perm ends as well, doing so will prevent breakage.
STEP 3: With Natural hair comes great responsibility. From the moment you decide to go natural you should start taking care of your hair. That includes using all natural or mostly natural products such as; sulfate free shampoos, conditioner, essential oils, and most importantly water. Yes, we can finally get our hair wet, water is a great moisturizing agent for natural hair. A ph balanced leave in conditioner is also necessary, a product that is ph balanced will close the cuticles and help to prevent breakage. If you are having a hard time finding a ph balanced product simply mix water and aloe vera juice along with essential oils of your choice and spritz your hair after a wash.  Be sure to deep condition on a regular basis, usually every week. One of the mistakes I made when I went natural was that I shampooed my hair every other day, this stripped my hair of the natural oils and my hair became brittle and damaged. Now, I shampoo my hair once a week with a sulfate free shampoo.
STEP 4: Wear protective styles as often as you can. If you are seeking to retain length, wearing protective styles are a great way to preserve your ends. Tucking your hair away means less breakage. Some protective styles include, two strand twists, flat twists, braids, wigs; the possibilities are endless. Still moisturize your hair while it is tucked away, I spritz my hair with water daily and oil my scalp three to four times a week. Embrace your edges. Lol. As natural queens we will never grow straight edges and getting that look can be very tempting, however, pomades and jells work very well to slick down your edges.
STEP 5: Don't be discouraged if you feel that your hair is not as long as you would like it to be yet. Everyone's hair grows at different rates, your diet also influences your hair growth. A healthy diet packed with protein, vegetables, fruits and plenty of water is ideal. Consult your physician before embarking on a new diet or before starting vitamins. The quickest way to ensure growth is to nourish your body from the inside. To stay motivated I watched tons of youtube hair journey videos.

STEP 6:  Enjoy the freeing feeling that comes along with having natural hair. Such as not having to run to the salon every six weeks to get a perm.
